History of the Caballerizas Reales of Córdoba
The roots of the Caballerizas Reales of Córdoba go deep into the history of the city. They were built upon the old stables of Alhakén I from the caliphal era, which once held more than two thousand horses.
With an enviable location between the city’s defensive walls and the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, the Caballerizas Reales of Córdoba were the dream of Philip II, which came true in 1570 through a Royal Decree written by his own hand.
Philip II’s goal of housing the best horses and breeding the finest breed in the world led to the creation of his great project and dream: the Andalusian pure Spanish breed horse. The Royal Stud of Córdoba became the cradle of this majestic animal, which would become an emblem of the Spanish Empire and its power.
The “Cathedral of Horses,” as Federico García Lorca called it, has a long and fascinating history. Since its creation, it has supplied stallions for the state forces, although it has faced setbacks. In 1734, a fire destroyed the entire facility, leaving only the exterior and interior facades.
Eleven years later, Ferdinand VI ordered its reconstruction, preserving its impressive size and architecture. Half a century later, in 1809, the Royal Stud of Córdoba was plundered by the French during the Spanish War of Independence. It wasn’t until 1841 that Spanish stallions returned to the facility.
From then until 1995, it served as the Cavalry barracks, becoming the 7th Stallion Depot of the Army, with Arabian and Andalusian horses. In 1929, the Caballerizas Reales of Córdoba were declared a National Historic Monument and part of the National Heritage.
Since 1995, the site has had various administrative and bureaucratic uses, both locally and internationally. Since 2010, the company Córdoba Ecuestre has managed the site with shows and guided tours, and in 2021 the Córdoba City Council acquired ownership of the venue with the goal of creating the International Horse Center.
