Puerta Almodovar in Cordoba

Puerta Almodovar in Cordoba

The Historic Center of Córdoba offers an authentic lesson in history, as well as art history. One of the key elements of this Historic Center is the Almodóvar Gate.

To access and explore the heart of Córdoba and walk through its streets and bridges, there’s nothing better than doing it in a quality vehicle. That’s why we recommend you to hire a car at Málaga Airport.

History of the Almodóvar Gate

The “Gate of the Jews,” as it was formerly known, dates back to its original construction in the 10th century. It was part of the wall that protected the medieval city. This gate led travelers to the Jewish Quarter of Córdoba.

What we can visit today is not the medieval gate itself, but the renovation carried out by the Christians in the 14th century. The Almodóvar Gate, one of the three that still remain, is part of the great treasure that is the Historic Center of Córdoba, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.

The Walnut Gate, known as Bad al-Yawz during the Muslim reign, still preserves its original walkway and battlements. A modern addition is the statue erected at the end of the last century in honor of Seneca.
