The village of Villanueva del Trabuco is situated in the southeast of Antequera, at the foot of the Sierra Gorda and the Sierra de San Jorge and belongs to the province of Malaga.
These mountains form the background of the village and fields surround it, that gives this area a landscape of beauty. Many sources at the foot of the mountains fill the streams, so they will have water almost all year-round and on the banks grow poplars, aspen and ash. Although Villanueva del Trabuco is situated in the mountains, it is well connected to Granada (only 1 hour) and only 30 min. to Malaga and the coast.
As in other communities nearby, we find traces of human settlement from prehistoric times, evidenced by the archaeological sites in the community. But after the Roman occupation and later by the Visigoths, there are hardly any major signs of human presence.
The name of the place could have following origin: 1. in the beginning of the 20th century the city had the form of a spin. 2. Legends tell that people at this time had to go to Archidona, to find food and after a while, at a cross-road near the village, arised a brisk trade. One dealer got often attacked on his way and robbed of goods, so that he bought himself a carbine rifle to defend. When he arrived in Archidona, people shouted "Here comes the uncle of the blunderbuss," a possible origin of the name of the city.
