Arriate is situated below the slopes of Ronda, in the valley of Guadalcobacín (an arm of the Guadiaro), in a beautiful environment. In the beautiful landscape you find wheat fields and olive groves, fruit and vegetable gardens.
The local area is on the hill and in front of the mountains of Ronda. This makes it unique, with continental climate in Mediterranean zone - long winters and hot summers.
When Philip II ordered the first census in 1570, it attested the same time, that the village already existed in ancient times. The story tells of a prehistoric village in the caves, on both sides of the river Alcobacín, that offered good protection against wild animals. It was obviously a primitive culture, like the excavations in the rocks show.
The most important historical event is the battle in the valley in Arriate in the year 1407 AC. The Muslims tried to seize some equipment of Setenil. The governor of Cañete la Real, came to Arriate to support the residents in the defense of their city and left his own fortress under the supervision of his son. When the Muslims heard this, they attacked Cañete, killing the son of the governor. In turn, the troops of Hernando Arias attacked the Muslims in the mountains of Arriate and defeated them.
