What do you need to know to hire a car?
When looking for car hire options at Malaga airport there are a few things to consider, as you will not be able to hire a car if you do not meet the following requirements.
What type of driving licence is required?
To rent a car, both in Malaga and in Spain, you need a driving licence that is legible, in Roman characters and valid, i.e. not expired.
However, an international driving licence is also highly recommended. In case your licence is not issued by an EU country or is not regulated in English or Spanish, the authorities may ask you for this international permit.
EU countries
A large number of people arriving at Malaga airport come from countries such as Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark or Sweden, all of them EU (European Union) member countries. In this case, the driver’s licence is considered fully valid as long as it complies with the bureaucratic requirements mentioned above.
Non-EU member countries
In the case of non-EU countries, it is possible to rent a car with the driving licence of the country of origin, although it is important to emphasise that it must be in Roman characters for it to be accepted. If this is not the case, it must be accompanied by the international driving licence.
Is a UK driving licence valid in Spain?
Yes. Although the United Kingdom was left out of the European Union after Brexit and is not considered a member country of the entity, at CarGest we consider the UK driver’s licence to be fully valid.
What age is required to drive a hire car?
Minimum Age
The minimum age to hire a car with CarGest is 21 years old, so those under the age of 21 will not be able to be a registered driver on the contract. Also, depending on the group of vehicles to which the car to be rented belongs, the minimum age will vary up to 25 years, as reflected in the following table:

Maximum age

What documentation do I need to hire a car?
