Drive + Golf

Last week a Malaga car hire company announced its imminent closure. Auriga-Crown with approximately 200 employees and a fleet of up to 25000 vehicles throughout Spain is in the process of terminating business due to the financial difficulties it faces. At the same and during a short period another 50 small local and family businesses have gradually disappeared, from the coast of Almeria to the coast of Cadiz, with the most of them being in the province of Malaga.

In the last few years and particularly in tourist areas, large car rental companies (owners of large fleet of vehvicles) have begun a race with no destination, apparently to give the lowest offers, surely with the aim of offering the client a vehicle at the most economic price, but probably with the purpose of starting a price war which may well then result in the disappearance of the majority of the existing local companies in Malaga and its province. Everyone is aware of the rates they are offering, they are below any costing thresholds and for sure this practice some important illegal aspects, for that reason it is probably expedient that public administration took note of this commercial instability.

If this is analyzed from a logical point of view it seems very suspect to offer, and we take a real example the price of 30€ for the rental of a car for 7 days (including full insurance, unlimited mileage and taxes) when a taxi service from Malaga airport to Marbella costs approximately 70€ each way, of course these prices are apparently discriminately applied at Malaga airport and not in other provinces in which these companies are active. Logically and curiously at the same rate that these large companies lower the rental prices they  usually raise the extras that clients have to pay for on their arrival, as a consequence this gives poor publicity to the car rental sector in general in the tourist areas. To give another example we can mention the advance payment taken for the concept of a full tank of petrol, which is usually approximately 30€ above the real cost at a petrol station.

Cargest’s view is that this is an unsustainable business practice, and looking to the not too distant future small and medium car rental companies in Malaga will begin to disappear, and along with them the personalized client services that they offer from being accessible family businesses. Another consequence which is as bad if not in fact worse than the afore mentioned is the number of people that will be left unemployed with all the personal traumas that this would cause.

Cargest Car Hire remains loyal to its business ethics as a local family company and is will continue without charging for petrol or other extras and maintaining very competitive prices without going to the limits being set by some of the large companies in this sector. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our clients for their trust and loyalty in us and collaborators who support in this measure, and for the good of everyone we hope that this unsustainable situation does not last for much longer.

Holy week

On March 1, 2012, in Holy week, by S.J.H.

Easter will soon be here a very special time of year throughout Spain in its cities and villages the easter celebrations are shared by young, old natives and visitors.

If you are travelling to Malaga during Easter make sure you take in the sights of some of the procesions and celebrations whilst you are here, the center of Malaga will give you an ambience you will rarely experience. This is not just for catholics or the religious, it is an experience never to be forgotten. I have over my years in Spain takem family and friends to events during the holy week and non have been failed to be moved by them whether that has been religiously or quite simply impressed by the scale at which Easter is celebrated here.

Brotherhoods and associations prepare diligently for the celebrations which are particulary special in Malaga, floats are housed in special buildings  as they are too large to be kept in the churches they are too high to pass through most of the churches doors. The floats vary in size but all are large and carried round the city on the shoulders men for hours. These traditions date back to the catholic monarchs and brotherhoods have thier own processional artifacts most of which is made of precious metals and very valuable. Particpants in the processions wear special robes and some are covered by masks which are rendant of the klu klux klan however these participants are the ‘nazarenos’ or the people of Nazareth who cover thier faces in shame.

Holy week in Malaga center is a fusion of sights and sounds some processions are silent but mostly you will hear ‘saetas’ flamenco songs and applause from the appreciative spectators of these wonderful floats depiciting the easter story. The smell of incense candles and the hundreds of flowers abound, and the streets are full of thousands of people, spectators participants and penitents alike, Easter week is a tradition not to be missed and a very important part of Spain’s culture. It is wise to check for infromation with the local authorities of times and routes of the procesions to take best advantage of this wonderful reason to visit Malaga at this time of year.

On March 1, 2012, in Tarifa tourism, by S.J.H.

This past weekend I made the short trip to the beautiful coast line of Tarifa in the neighbouring province of Cadiz using the toll road from Malaga you can drive to Tarifa in about an hour and a half which makes it a feasible day trip from the Costa del Sol. Tarifa is the closest land point to Africa and is best associated with its water sports and as it is a notoriously windy location for wind and kite surfing, these though are not sports that interest me as a participant though as a spectator I find them fascinating, I was lucky enough to of been invited to horse ride on the beach there. This area is a natural park and is flat wide expanse of beach which as a horse lover is natural riding space where you can gallop through the surf ( avioding the fishermen) free of obstacles, we had a wonderful time and I hope to go back. However many sports and day trips to see the whales and dolphins or a ferry over to Tangers are available or a day on the beach of Bolonia just a short distance along to Cadiz.

Get in the car and explore the Costa del Sol and its surrounding areas have so much on offer.
