Riogordo is situated 6 Km from Colmenar and 39 from Málaga. The city declines softly from the north to the south. The famous mountains around are: alto de Comer (1.129 m), sierra del Rey (972 m), cerro de Sacristía (620 m) and loma del Terral (573 m). Running through the city you also find the river de la Cueva and the creeks Golilla, Morena and Solanas.
Riogordo was one of the villages which was longest under dominion of the Arabic. When the Catholic Kings captured the district of Axarquía in 1487, they started to share it between knights and soldiers, all were Christians. In the first half of the 16th century Riogordo was founded as a city.
Characteristic in the city of Rio Gordo you find alcoves situated in the highest point of some old houses. In total exist thirteen of these alcoves and some of them are mentioned since the end of the 16th century. They constitude crucified Christ, painful and sacred.
