Geografic location :
Mijas is an Andalusian city in the pro¬vince of Málaga. Situated in the west Costa del Sol, 30 km in the southwest of the Capital. The urban area extends over the mountains of Mijas (whose higest peak is over 1150 meters high), to the sea, over mountain ridges and hills landscape. The village in the mountains, has the charm of the typical white Andalusian villages. Mijas Costa, the modern part of town, is located at the coast. There you'll find an industrial area and shopping centers. La Cala is a coastal resort in Mijas and is located 12 km from Mijas Pueblo.
The village has its origin in ancient world, as dicoveries in the mountains indicate, which now is the parish church. Mijas was one of Turdetans and we still find several witnesses of this past on the present city wall. Phoenicians and Greeks found the rich mines, and sent the minerals to the East. In the 2nd century BC. Ptolomeo discribed exact and geographical detailed, what happened in this time. The Romans gave it the name Tamisa and started a major trade.
Also interesting is the aspect of the popu¬lation statistics of Mijas, the proportion of foreign residents. In this district people live from over 113 different nationalities.
Famous are also the special transport: the donkey-taxi - this folkloric taxi, reminiscent to the old time, when the donkey was the only possible trans-port in the mountains ways. Mijas Pueblo is one of the few areas where this animal was maintained, that now is an endangered species.
