The community Jimera del Líbar is located in one of the most beautiful valleys of Malaga, the valley of Guadiaro, located in the heart of the Serrania de Ronda, in the Sierra de Líbar, on the left side of the river Guadiaro. A part of the town is in the nature park "Sierra de Grazalema". Jimera of Líbar is divided in two clearly defined rural areas: The high level of olive trees and oaks - and the Barrio de Estacion, at the bottom, near the River. Both offer one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the region.
Because of the findings in and around the cave "Cueva de la Pileta", we know that already in the Neolithic period a first settlement existed. Excavations at the building of today's tax office and the train shed showed, that at the time of the Phoenicians, a small village was populated.
The present village has its origin in an Arab fortress called "Inz Almaraz" (palace of women). After the reconquest by the Christians, this castle was rebuilt as the village church. In the recent reconstruction they found remains of a Muslim cemetery. .
The old name was Ximera or Ximena, which was changed into his present name in the end of the 19th century, when his population reached the high point of 1500 inhabitants.
