Frigiliana is situated in the face of the sierra de Almijara. Only a few villages at the coast offer a panoramic view as magnificant as you find from this position.
The city of Frigiliana was already populated in pre¬history, like some neolithic remains announce, which were found in the cave of bats (Cueva de los Murciélagos).
Between the 6th and the 7th century BC, there was a necropolis of Phoeni-cians as findings show, discovered in the Cerro de las Sombras. It seems that there must have existed a Phoenician city, caused by the transit of goods between the coast and inland. Later we could find a roman influence only few kilometers away from the city, called Frigiliana old town, situated in the cerro El Fuerte (976 m altitude). They discovered rests of surroundig walls, houses and coins belonging to this imperial era.
