The distance to Málaga capital is 50 km and it is divided from Granada by the the natural mountains of the Sierra Nevada, which reach until Nerja. In the northeast border of Axarquía, Competa decline to the coast through the mountains of Torrox or across the Ruta Mudéjar, which starts in Algarrobo up to Algarrobo-Costa. The urban centre of Competa is very muy attractive and charming, its painted walls are an attraction and all visitors are enchanted.
The chapel of San Antón with its spectacular natural views, gives competa the famous name “cornisa mediterranea” (guard of the mediterranean).
The latin name of Competa is Compita-Orum, which means “Cruces de camino” (cross-roads), meetingpoint for all folklore fairs and comercial transactions of the roman, although until today they cannot document these theorys.
Documents of the beginning 14th century, make believe that Competa wasn´t more than a small Alquería. Since the year 1457 it is already mentioned in the records of Vélez.
