Geografic location
Casarabonela is a town in the province of Malaga and is situated in the district of the Sierra de las Nieves, which is a protected area and was declared as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The area around Casarabonela was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Traces of human presence were found in various abodes and caves, mostly in the form of cavepaintings, stone tools or graves.
The first demonstrable settlements of this region date back to prehistoric times. We found homes in caves and grottoes, polished stone tools, pottery, cave paintings and tombs. At the time of Roman rule, the number of inhabitants and the place was very important. Muhammad V conquered the area from the hands of the Spanish dominion in 1366. In that period of Muslim rule the Arabic name of the city was Bunayra Qasr. In the late fifteenth century, in the final phase of the war of Granada, Casarabonela finally falls into the hands of the Catholic Kings, on Thursday 2nd of June 1485.
