A mountain village situated 925m above sea level; it has a boundary to the north east of the Axarquia natural park and is surrounded by the mountain ranges Palomera, Enmedio, and Jobo. The contrast between its rocky ranges and green cultivated valley of olives and cherries is particularly worth mention.
The village was founded in the Muselman period and from that the annual local festival celebrated in September is known as the ‘moors and Christians’.
Alfarnate has both architecture and monuments worth mention such as “El Mirador del Santo Cristo” and the Arab influence that can be noted in its architecture an example of this is the Museum/restaurant ‘Antigua Venta de Alfarnate’.
A visit to these well maintained Arab influenced sites are recommended, history also notes that the famous bandits “José Mª “el Tempranillo”and “Luis Candela” have stayed in the village amongst others.
